Our city is highly dependent on sales taxes for our revenues. We have recently renamed our community development department to community and economic development in order to emphasize the need to focus on supporting our existing businesses, attract new small and large business, encourage entrepreneurship, and increase our tourism levels. We will have to be intentional and proactive to identify businesses that would be a good fit for our city, employ our residents, and provide a solid, diverse, and enduring, economic base.
When I ran two years ago I asserted that our streets were a mess, budget was tight and just had our fire department annexed. The city government was in turmoil and we were down one councilmember. Since then, we have hired a new city manager, passed balanced budgets, endured the economic downturn with no layoffs, paved streets and have a council that deliberates carefully and with transparency.
Santa Paula is a diverse city and over 80% Latino. I strive to represent all residents and ensure our city government does not have a narrow focus on the business sector and the politically connected. Our new website can be viewed in any language and have increased the times we have interpretation at city council and community meetings.
